JOB: Production Assistant – NPR Podcast – Chicago

How To Do Everything is looking for a production assistant to book guests, edit audio, and contribute ideas to our podcast. We want a tenacious booker—someone who isn’t satisfied with an acceptable guest, but will call expert after expert until they track down the perfect guest. We want a curious and creative contributor—someone who wants to know how things in the world work, and someone who is full of ideas and seeks interesting & unique ways to cover stories.

This is a full-time position based in Chicago.

Essential Duties Include:

Edits audio.

  • Edits interviews and reporter tracks/actualities/ambience.
  • Prepares scripts and other materials as required.

Generates story and interview ideas.

  • Stays current with major stories and pitches ideas for interviews and pieces.
  • Conducts research and assists in arranging interviews.
  • Pre-interviews guests and prepares research material for hosts.
  • Interacts with audience (as assigned), through relevant social media platforms
  • Handles day to day scheduling of studios

Likes to laugh and have fun as part of a dynamic culture.

Other Duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.

Required: 

  • At least 1.5 years’ experience in broadcasting.
  • At least 1.5 years’ experience in news journalism.
  • Ability to edit audio
  • Experience producing in and operating digital audio self-op facilities.
  • Ability and willingness to work varied shifts.
  • Ability to collect, organize and disseminate information effectively.
  • Thorough knowledge of research tools, including internal & external computerized databanks and social media forums.
  • Demonstrated writing ability.
  • Demonstrated ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure. Ability to handle more than one assignment at a time; ability to prioritize, anticipate and communicate effectively.

Preferred: 

  • Experience in radio broadcasting.
  • Digital media skills, including proficiency in social media as a tool for news-gathering and audience interaction.
