Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Art Foundations The George Mason University, School of Art in the College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) seeks highly qualified candidates to fill a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor position as Coordinator for Studio Foundations. The School of Art offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in art with concentrations in Painting, Drawing, Sculpture, Printmaking, Critical Art Practices, Graphic Design, Photography, and New Media. Our M.F.A. program prepares students for employment in higher education or to pursue other scholarly and professional artistic endeavors, and our M.A.T. program prepares students with a B.F.A. degree for PK-12 art licensure by the commonwealth of Virginia. Responsibilities: Administrative responsibilities focus on Foundations program development and oversight including curriculum development, scheduling of eight to ten adjunct faculty members, maintenance of studio facilities, and shared administration of the School of Arts ArtsBus program. Teaching expectations include ability to effectively cover traditional and extended media for 2-D and 3-D Foundations courses and sculpture. Demonstrated ability to cross disciplines through extended media and performance is highly sought. Qualifications: The ideal candidate’s professional practice is based in sculpture, and has as an active record of research and exhibitions.
Required: M.F.A. with a focus in 3-D media; demonstrated expertise in a wide-range of traditional fabrication skills, and expertise in contemporary media; ability to maintain woodworking and metalworking equipment; knowledge of contemporary issues and critical discourse; and ability to work across disciplines. Three years of full-time teaching experience beyond graduate school with a focus on foundations and sculpture is desired.
The position begins August 2014. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
