Hey everyone!

As most of us are in the media, I would like to strongly suggest support NPR with your membership. As you may agree, I think NPR is one of the greatest supporters of multimedia and quality journalism both online and on air. I give in monthly installments which makes it a lot easier than one huge lump sum. WAMU’s annual membership campaign is going on and all membership fees are tax deductible. So give early, give often. Keep the programs alive! :)

Hey everyone:

The WPOW mentorship committee has extended their deadline for the Spring 209 Mentorship Program since it proved to be so popular. If you are a seasoned professional wanting to learn a new skill, a student who wants some portfolio help or even retired and interested in brushing up on some new ways to present your work, WPOW wants you to sign up today

We will be teaming folks up to learn and perfect skills through this month. If you not a member yet, sign up now! We love getting new members. All you need to be in a woman, in DC, who specaliazes in photojournalism and wants to either SHARE YOUR SKILLS or LEARN SOME NEW SKILLS. It’s that easy!

It’s a once a month requirement and you can even do it over the phone or email if you want.
The deadline says tonight but if you get it in on Sunday and say you learned about it through Jamie’s list, it’ll probably be okay! ;)

Hey everyone! As you may know, I have happily taken on the role of President of the Women Photojournalists of Washington (WPOW), a new DC nonprofit dedicated to educating people about the work of women photojournalists around the city and the world. This is a call for members and a way to get involved no matter your gender!

For anyone who is a documentary or news photojournalism professional (EDITORS, STUDENTS, PROFESSORS, VIDEOGRAPHERS, MULTIMEDIA, PRODUCERS ARE WELCOME TOO!) We want you to join us. Come see what we’re all about today by joining our ranks! Please pass this onto others who might be interested too.

Also, for all the MENFOLK and out of towners, we have a section of our nonprofit called Friends of WPOW for men and women from around the country who want to support our efforts. Both men and women can join WPOW in a support basis, no matter where you live or what your profession.

So please consider joining today or passing this onto someone who might not know about us yet. We are excited about the new programs we have to offer. Our mentoring program is kicking off this year as well as thriving happy hours (men are encouraged to come…(grin)…) and exciting quarterly meetings with local DC photographers talking about their latest projects. This coming year we hope to have more exciting exhibits of our work, lectures for the general public and scholarship and projects grants too!

So come one and come call and join this great group today at http://womenphotojournalists.org

Photographers are notoriously bad dressers at work and look like shlubs a lot of the time. Those who don’t are remembered for it and their appearance inspires confidence and professionalism (Stephen Crowley, Doug Mills, Dennis Brack, Susan Biddle, etc.). I struggle with how to balance all that gear and a suit often. However, if those guys above can do it so can we all I guess!

So if you’re having trouble figuring out what to wear or have a question about business expectations, check out these great tip sites:

Women by Women: A Juried Exhibition of WPOW members
The women of the Women Photojournalists of Washington craft a visual
journey through the lives of women and girls around the world. From
the desperation of an emergency room in Haiti, to an ordered classroom
in China; from the bubble gum pink of a girls bathroom during a middle
school dance, to a whitewashed detention center on Mexico’s border–
moments of beauty, humor and darkness present themselves in their
rawest form.
Curated by Ken Geiger, National Geographic Senior Editor and
MaryAnne Golon, Time Magazine, Consulting Editor
at the Sewall-Belmont House and Museum
144 Constitution Ave, NE
Washington, DC 20002
Metro Union Station
Next to Hart Senate Office Bldg
Download the pdf of the exhibition postcard here!

Special thanks to National Geographic Photography Lab for printing the show, MaryAnne Golon and Ken Geiger for their time, and the WPOW exhibitions committee for all their hard work!

There will be a second opening of this show for Foto Week DC in Nov. which will include a print auction supporting WPOW.

(grin) Well, maybe not of all time but it’s pretty darned amazing!!!  This is a collection of the Women Photojournalists of Washington work that was created for the Look3 Festival of the Photograph. It has some amazing work in there. The theme was simply “women” and the photographs run the gamut of portraits to photojournalism to documentary to studio work. It’s really beautiful.

And since this is my blog and I’m a shameless self promoter, my pics are at the following times during the show: 7:20, 6:32, 3:42, 2:49, 2:44.
