A big thanks to web designer David Wright of NPR for doing the WHNPA websites every year for WHNPA. He diligently worked this weekend to get the Student Photographer of the Year winners up online.

You can see the award winning work of the White House News Photographers Association’s Student Photographer of the Year at http://www.whnpa.org/contest/eyes2009/students/. Congratulations to  winner Michael Mullady of SFSU and Award of Excellence winners Matt Eich of OU and John Adkisson of UNC!

If you’re not a member of WHNPA, you are always welcome to sign up at the website, whnpa.org. You don’t have to have a White House pass! Just be a photographer in the DC area who covers politics and news and you’re in!

If you are a member, come on out and support John Harrington and his run for President of WHNPA this week.

Also at the meeting will be awesome presentations by the following folks:
Peter Abraham, a Steadicam® Operator for 21 years, who has worked for The Tiffen Company as Steadicam Workshops coordinator and instructor, salesman and contributor to Steadicam design. Peter will be demonstrating the latest rigs from Steadicam that work with today’s compact HD cameras or latest generation DSLR cameras offering HD video as well.
Orlando Luna, Senior Systems Engineer from Apple will present Tiffen Dfx Software on the Macintosh Platform with Apple Aperture and Final Cut Pro as part of your convergent workflow process. Orlando is a photographer, filmmaker, and educator, whose photography credits include the New York Times, Nike, Newsweek, and MTV. He previously directed Luna Studio, a multimedia organization established in 1987 in Miami, Fla.
Eric Druker has been in the Motion Picture/Television/Image Creation industry for over 23 years and has been Manager of Eastern Sales at Lowel-Light Mfg. Inc. since 1996. I just got some great news: I won the WHNPA Fall 2008 Lecture Grant so I can visit Syracuse University this spring to lecture to Bruce Strong and David Sutherland’s photojournalism students about my work and the WHNPA project grant I won in 2006.

I am so thankful to live in Washington, DC and be a member of such a great organization like the White House News Photographer’s Association! Truly. It’s a pretty wonderful thing to be able to belong to a group which supports photographers’ ambitions to give back to members of the student community.

Thanks to Chairman Leighton Mark and all the members of the Grant Committee for this awesome award! I am so thankful to be able to give back to my alma mater!

On behalf of the WHNPA we’d like to extend an invitation our summer cookout.
The fun starts at 4 p.m., next Saturday, Aug. 16, at the Washington Canoe Club (under the Key Bridge at the end of K Street – which turns into Water Street). The WHNPA is providing the food and drink (i.e. FREE) – all you need to bring is lawn chairs or blankets and beach umbrellas and get comfortable while spending a great night with friends and rockin’ music by the Rick Sickmen band – featuring WHNPA’s own Ed Eaves of NBC on drums.
We do ask if possible, to drop an RSVP to heidi@whnpa.org so we make sure to have enough food and drink for all our colleagues and friends.
