DOING WELL BY DOING GOOD: Working in the Non-profit/NGO Market

An Evening with Jamie Rose / Momenta Workshops
Wednesday, September 14, 2011

In the work-a-day world, it’s rare to find a path where you can both make a living and make a change. Helping to tell the story for Non-Profits and NGOs (non-governmental organizations) is one of those paths. Whether creating still imagery or video/multimedia documentaries, working with these organizations is a viable way to exercise your creative muscle and build a business.

Join us to hear Jamie Rose speak about what it means to shoot for non-profits, what the work looks like, and the practical in’s and out’s of working for these organizations.

Jamie Rose is an international award-winning photojournalist based here in Washington, DC. She has worked in 5 continents, won awards and grants for her documentary photography and has been a contract photographer with some of the world’s largest nonprofit organizations, including Doctors Without Borders and The Global Fund. Jamie’s work has been published in National Geographic Books, The New York Times Magazine, TIME, Newsweek, and others. She has been internationally recognized for her long term documentary projects on volunteer health care providers and humanitarian issues.

In 2009, Jamie joined Momenta as the Director of Workshops and creates the curriculum for that division. In 2011, she was awarded the United Nations’ ICP Photographers Leadership Award in New York City for her devotion to the field of documentary photography.

I am so proud, humbled and flattered to be selected by the board of White House News Photographers Association for the United Nation’s IPC Professional Photographer Leadership Awards. I cannot thank WHNPA for giving me this honor and allowing me to represent the organization as your 2011 recipient.

Past winners include legends Nancy Andrews, Carol Guzy, Michael Williamson, Diana Walker, Dennis Brack, Pete Souza, Manny Garcia, John Harrington, Marty Lavour, Mary Calvert and Jon Elswick. I feel very small standing in the footsteps of such giants.

It’s an overwhelming honor to be given this award. While I love that I’ve been honored by the association for my photographic projects, I am especially proud you think I am a leader in the industry. I will continued to work hard to keep fighting for the rights, and education of documentarians in our industry. I cannot thank you all enough for this. I feel on top of the world!

RE: http://www.poyi.org

COLUMBIA, Mo. – For some it might be a passion, for others an avocation and to a few, maybe a dream not yet accomplished. Now, with the assistance of a new project from Pictures of the Year International (POYi), a program of the Reynolds Journalism Institute (RJI), semi-professional, student, and early-career photographers will have the opportunity to do work of a global significance.

POYi, the oldest photojournalism program in the world, has announced the “POYi Emerging Vision Incentive.” The incentive will fund and showcase documentary work on social issues or political trends by aspiring documentary photographers. The Emerging Vision Incentive recipient will receive up to $10,000 to assist in developing a photo story that reflects daily life, social issues, cultural trends or news events.

“We are excited to be able to provide the environment and inspiration for emerging photographers to do work of worldwide importance,” said Rick Shaw, director of POYi. “We hope this program will help educate and motivate the next generation of social-conscious photojournalists and allow them to explore and expand avenues of publication that are currently unavailable to them.”

In addition to financial assistance, the recipient will have the opportunity to have his or her work displayed at RJI and The Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles during their exhibit of winning images from the 67th Annual POYi Competition which opens in June 2010. The Emerging Vision Incentive recipient will also receive a full day of career-development during the annual POYi Education Seminar and Awards Program.

The POYi Emerging Vision Incentive program is made possible through financial support from the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute and the Annenberg Foundation. For more information, please download the Emerging Incentive Guide and the Application Form.

…for Booth #967 (Camera Bits/Photo Mechanic)

Schedule and topics of speakers at the Camera Bits booth (#967) during PhotoPlus:

Jamie Rose, Photographer & Director of Momenta Workshops

Thursday Oct 22nd 1:00 pm
Friday Oct 23rd 1:00 pm
Saturday Oct 24th 11:00 am

“Basic Mechanics: Using Photo Mechanic in the Field & on Assignment”

Jamie Rose will be presenting a demonstration of how she uses Photo Mechanic while in the field and on assignment. She will demonstrate the basic but most important features of Photo Mechanic, such as ingesting, tagging, batch renaming, applying IPTC, watermarking and other features that are essential to a photographer’s workflow. She takes you through the invaluable ways that Photo Mechanic can speed up your workflow and make any photographer’s editing process quicker, more streamlined, and altogether less demanding

John Harrington, President of the White House News Photographers Association

Thursday Oct 22nd 11:00 am
Friday Oct 23rd 12:00 pm

” Using Photo Mechanic To Boost Your Profits”

Join photographer John Harrington as he shows you how he’s uses Photo Mechanic when seconds count to get images out from assignments worldwide. Whether it’s traveling with the President, or in the middle of the Baltic Sea, Photo Mechanics’ tools mean fast access to the selection, editing, and transmission process. How does this translate into profits? Photo Mechanics’ e-mailing and direct transmission to client FTP destinations and services like PhotoShelter generate “transmission fees” as well as their templates for metadata and emailing mean lightning-fast delivery to serve fast-paced client demands. In addition, John’s use of Photo Mechanics’ browsing window onsite when doing executive portraits gives subjects fast and easy previews of their portraits moments after being taken.

David Riecks, founder of ControlledVocabulary.com

Thursday Oct 22nd 2:00 pm
Friday Oct 23rd 11:00 am

“Structured Keyword Catalog and the CVKC”

David will demonstrate how the Structured Keyword Catalog in Photo Mechanic uses a controlled vocabulary, which is a managed set of hierarchical terms for keywording images so that others can easily find the image they need when searching. Version 3.0 of the Controlled Vocabulary Keyword Catalog (or CVKC) contains approximately 11,000 keyword terms, including a broad range of people, lifestyle, and concept themes ˜ all organized in a hierarchical structure with segregated synonyms. Use of the CVKC insures consistency in selection and spelling of specific keyword terms and helps guide the keyworder to appropriate synonyms.

“How to use the Code Replacement Feature to Add a Set of Keywords to a Folder of Images”

David will demonstrate how the Code Replacement feature can take a spreadsheet containing filenames and keywords, to populate the keyword field as a batch process to a folder of images. This is important for any photographer or image collection manager (stock agency) that outsources their keywording, and needs to move that information back into the original image files (to feed into a DAM system, or to share with a distributor, or other collection).

Friday Oct 23rd 10:00 am
