National Geographic’s Image collection just launched a great book of their archive. Basically it’s a ‘best of’ the entire collection. Allard, McCurry, McNally, Harvey, Cobb…all the greats it looks like.

You can buy it here: http://www.amazon.com/National-Geographic-Image-Collection/dp/1426205031

And you can hear the NGS folks talk about it at a public lecture Oct. 20: http://bit.ly/LKRoV

From Nov. 1, professional still photographers can apply for a $50,000 photography grant from National Geographic magazine. Any professional photographer whose primary source of income is his or her photography is eligible. Applications will be accepted through Feb. 15, 2009. The application process will require a written statement outlining a proposed or current project and examples of the applicant’s photography. The work presented should demonstrate an ability to competently photograph the project being undertaken or proposed.

Last year’s grantee was Jonas Bendiksen, who is documenting the population explosion in Chongqing, a city in western China. The 2006 grantee, Eugene Richards, has covered people profoundly affected by the conflict in Iraq.

Festival of the Photograph! To help us relive some of our favorite moments
from last year and prepare for the upcoming Festival, we’ve put together a
short video and posted it on YouTube. Check it out and pass it along to
your friends: http://youtube.com/watch?v=iKAYdUyiw4c

Our outstanding program for June 2008 continues to grow and we are very
excited to announce some of the latest additions. On June 13, Gerd Ludwig
will present his latest work from Moscow at the Paramount Theater and on
June 14, David Alan Harvey presents “American Family,” The all new LOOK3
Theater will screen a dynamic multimedia program from contributors
including Media Storm, Women
Photojournalists of Washington, and the NY Times. Also, Sam Abell and Julie
Blackmon share the stage with curators Leah Ben-David Val and Darius Himes
to pay tribute to innovative collaborations between photographers and
publishers in our BOOKS exhibition.
