DOING WELL BY DOING GOOD: Working in the Non-profit/NGO Market

An Evening with Jamie Rose / Momenta Workshops
Tuesday, September 14, 2011

In the work-a-day world, it’s rare to find a path where you can both make a living and make a change. Helping to tell the story for Non-Profits and NGOs (non-governmental organizations) is one of those paths. Whether creating still imagery or video/multimedia documentaries, working with these organizations is a viable way to exercise your creative muscle and build a business.

Join us to hear Jamie Rose speak about what it means to shoot for non-profits, what the work looks like, and the practical in’s and out’s of working for these organizations.

Jamie Rose is an international award-winning photojournalist based here in Washington, DC. She has worked in 5 continents, won awards and grants for her documentary photography and has been a contract photographer with some of the world’s largest nonprofit organizations, including Doctors Without Borders and The Global Fund. Jamie’s work has been published in National Geographic Books, The New York Times Magazine, TIME, Newsweek, and others. She has been internationally recognized for her long term documentary projects on volunteer health care providers and humanitarian issues.

In 2009, Jamie joined Momenta as the Director of Workshops and creates the curriculum for that division. In 2011, she was awarded the United Nations’ ICP Photographers Leadership Award in New York City for her devotion to the field of documentary photography.

Don’t miss this important evening.

Hello, Momenta Fans!

We are so happy the summer has finally arrived! All of us we are in full planning mode for our 2010 and 2011 workshops. In this update we will describe a few of our new trips as well as talk about the newsletter and new places in the Momenta workshop lineup.

MYANMAR 2010: THE ART OF THE PHOTO STORY
We are very excited to present our third trip to the gorgeous and exciting country of Myanmar (Burma). As you can see from our Facebook photos from the last workshop in November, we had a blast and the photographs were amazing!

This year, we’ll be traveling to Myanmar during the period of October 17 – October 30, 2010. This period coincides with two major Buddhist holidays. First it is the close of Buddhist Lent. After three months of reflection and low-movement, the country “wakes-up” and takes on a air of celebration, both local and national. This is immediately followed by the Buddhist Festival of Lights.

This festive period marks a time when everyone celebrates after having restrained themselves for months. It’s truly a unique time in which to travel the country and something we’ve literally been waiting over two years to schedule at this particular time.

PROJECT INDIA 2011: WORKING WITH NONPROFITS
This great trip takes us again back to Dehradun to photograph the work of nonprofits in Northern India. Nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas, the bustling town of Dehradun offers us a unique location to find Tibetan refugee services, medical and health related nonprofits as well as children and women’s programs and so much more.

The workshop will begin January 30 in Dehli with our group orientation and celebration dinner and then we will travel by train through the countryside up North to the Dehradun to start photographing. Daily editing and mentoring with instructors while working hand in hand with your nonprofits will combine with a weekend excursions to a resort town on the River Ganges. Students will work on photo stories relating to their nonprofit partner and have the opportunity to work with more than one nonprofit if they choose. The student photo stories are presented during a group slideshow party hosted by Momenta for the nonprofit staff, volunteers, students and the public.

FUTURE WORKSHOPS IN 2011
In future updates, we’ll be presenting you with our Project New Orleans, Vietnam and South Africa trips lined up for 2011. Other locations for the year will include business skills, overseas explorations and possibly another wedding workshop! We will keep you posted through Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter as new developments arise.

AT LONG LAST…THE MOMENTA NEWSLETTER!
In July we will launch our long awaited newly designed newsletter! While we will talk about future trips and workshops, we also want this newsletter to be a place for you to learn about photography grants, scholarships, training and networking opportunities. Hopefully it will be one more way for us all to continue the discussions we start during the workshops!

If you have not signed up, please use our contact page at http://momentaworkshops.com/contact.php or email our staff at info@momentaworkshops.com to be added to the list.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

As always, we welcome your questions and comments at info@momentaworkshops.com. Please feel free to request an itinerary or schedule a phone call with a staff member to discuss joining us for a workshop in the future.

From all of us at Moment we want to wish you a summer of fun filled adventure and great photography. We look forward to seeing all of you on a trip in 2010 or 2011!

Warmest regards,
Jamie, Chris, Seth & the Momenta Workshop Staff

WORKSHOP HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:

• 10 days of intense nonprofit documentary photography with daily editing from Momenta staff, including award winning lead instructor Chris Usher

• Benefit NGOs in their need to publicize and project their activities to new audiences.

• Work one-on-one with instructors to develop a logistical and photographic plan to document a working NGO helping the recovery process.

• Gain rare access to these projects and forge relationships to last into the future.

• Explore, discuss and examine the different types of outreach and aid programs in this deep South region. Relate this, with the benefit of mentors, to your own personal mission and develop a more broad approach to your own work.

ABOUT OUR LEAD INSTRUCTOR

Award winning photographer Chris Usher spent several years as a newspaper photographer before going freelance and moving to Washington, DC. Usher’s work has been seen in TIME, LIFE, Newsweek, US News & World Report, Sports Illustrated, People, Fortune, Forbes, BusinessWeek, L’Express, Der Spiegel, Stern and more.

Chris’ documentation of behind-the-scenes moments at the White House, entitled Behind the Velvet Rope, is currently traveling the country. His book, One of Us, a two-year photo-documentary project begun on the day Hurricane Katrina made landfall in the Gulf Coast, was just published and the fine art prints are featured at the Corcoran Gallery of Art through January before it tours the United States. All proceeds from the book will go to help victims of the Hurricane.

Momenta Workshops is honored to have Chris with us for Project Katrina. Chris has taught dozens of workshops around the world and is now an adjunct professor of photojournalism at the Corcoran School of Art + Design in Washington, D.C. With his dedication to the region and his amazing teaching style, he is the perfect lead instructor for this workshop.

ABOUT OUR WORKSHOP EXPERIENCE

As the city rebuilds from one of the most costly and devastating disasters in modern America, Momenta Workshops will spend a week focusing the efforts of outreach by assisting non-profits working to bring the Big Easy back to life. Students will be assigned to various nonprofit to document the projects to rebuild in post-Hurricane Katrina, Louisiana. Working hand-in-hand with the nonprofit organizations, the students will be able to photograph on a documentary, narrative essay as well as give back to organizations dedicated to the betterment of their community.

Students will enjoy unequaled access to local and international organizations in a city that needs help documenting the hard work that gone into rebuilding and how much work is still left to do. In the Momenta “Photography as a Force of Change” series, there is a proven track record of photography and multimedia material being used to help further social change. No less can be expected in a region still crawling out from the shadow of such a overwhelming event.

Seven days of intense photography led by our experienced instructors is the centerpiece of this workshop. We’ll be working on the ground in the hardest hit areas of New Orleans. On the final night (Saturday) of the workshop, Momenta will host a slide show presentation for all the organizations who participated in the workshop, local residents and the workshop attendees. We also encourage you to invite your families and friends as well. The final projects of each student will be presented including the projects from audio/video teams as well.

We at Momenta are very excited to offer this workshop that not only allows students to participate in photographic coverage of nonprofit organizations but also gives back to a population in need of positive support. This is a great alternative spring break option for college students or professors alike. Families should be encouraged to join the workshop attendees and volunteer with our partner organizations.

Important Note: This workshop requires a minimum skills aptitude due to the nature of the close work with the partner non-profits. Applications for inclusion will be reviewed individually to both assess skills, and also find the right fit with a local NGO partner. This program is designed to capitalize on skills acquired in previous workshop experiences.

The workshops fees cover the first and last night’s dinner celebrations, the slideshow party for the nonprofits, students and guests, the famous Momenta traveling open bar, instructors fees and any guest speakers and all workshop handouts and materials. They do not include housing, airfare or transportation. We have arranged special deals with hotels in New Orleans including a place that offers $20/night dorm style housing for those of you on a budget. We also can offer our travel agent to assist you in finding flight and car deals.
