Momenta Workshop is happy to announce our Project Katrina 2009 Workshop (http://momentaworkshops.com/katrina09.php) will be taught by lead instructor Chris Usher, award winning photographer featured in TIME, LIFE, Newsweek, Sports Illustrated, People, Fortune, Forbes, BusinessWeek and more.

Chris was a natural selection for the lead instructor for this workshop, which will pair students up with nonprofits in Hurricane Katrina effected areas. Chris’ recently published book, One of Us, is a groundbreaking in philanthropic documentary photojournalism.  The chief business development officer of Eastman Kodak, the main sponsor of the book said, “When you open Chris Usher’s book, you realize just how important it is that we all continue to support rebuilding in the Gulf Coast.”

Momenta Workshops is honored to have such a talented instructor and photographer at the helm of this amazing workshop and we are very excited to add Katrina to the 2009 lineup! Check out all the details at:

Please email jamie@jamierose.net or seth@momentaworkshops.com about scholarship and discount opportunities or any other questions about this workshop. See you in New Orleans!

For those who find themselves in NOLA for the anniversary, Chris Usher will be having a book launching party for his three year long photographic project “One of Us,” following victims of the Hurricanes and their struggles to get back on their feet. The launch party will be Friday August 29th from 6pm-? at a bar called “Live Bait” located in the shadow of the 17th Street Canal break on 200 Hammond Hwy. in Metairie. The cajun band T’Canaille will be playing. Knowing Chris and Adrienne, it will be a party of epic proportions!

All the proceeds from the book go to help the victims. ALL OF IT. Kodak and Usher aren’t making money off this. So it truly is a humanitarian project. See Chris’ interview at http://www.kodak.com/US/en/corp/pressCenter/newPodcast/podcastPro.jhtml

As many of you know (Chris Usher most especially knows this firsthand), the victims of Hurricane Katrina and Rita are still struggling to restore their communities and rebuild their homes. The Southern Mutual Help Association is an amazing group I worked with following Katrina while working for The Calvert Foundation. One of the people I photographed said they had gone to FEMA, The Red Cross and numerous other organizations and no one ever responded. Then one day a woman (who I think is a saint) from SMHA showed up and said, “What do you need?” They told her and she called the next day to say she was getting volunteers to come and help rebuilt that next week. The man told me, “No one ever called back. Ever. We were forgotten for months and months. Then SMHA called. It was a miracle.”

Recently, they had a photographer working with them to shoot and write a project on their work and their clients. It is posted online here:

Click on the PDF and download this very worthwhile project and the last page has a HOW CAN YOU HELP page which is great. We can all do things like this and I hope this gives you inspiration to do so!
