The Alexia Foundation Professional Competition (Deadline: Jan. 18th)

Portfolio Format and Requirements

Applications must be submitted through our online application process. (If you find it impossible to enter online, contact grants@alexiafoundation.org and we will find a way to get your entry into our system.)

Your portfolio must not have more than 20 photographs.

Deadline

Applications must be received by 5 p.m. EST, January 18, 2013.

Introduction to the Professional Competition Rules

The Alexia Foundation offers the professional grant to enable a photographer to have the financial ability to produce a substantial picture story that furthers the Foundation’s goals of promoting world peace and cultural understanding.

Eligibility

Any photographer from any country may apply for this grant. Proposals that have received grants or awards exceeding $1,000 in the previous calendar year are not eligible. This award is for an individual photographer. Collaborative applications are not accepted.

Judging Criteria

The Alexia Grant was not established with the single purpose of rewarding the best photographers – this is not a portfolio competition. The grant will be awarded to a photojournalist who can further cultural understanding and world peace by conceiving and writing a concise, focused, and meaningful story proposal, and who can demonstrate the ability to visually execute that story with compelling images. There is no mathematical formula for determining grantees, but the proposal and photography must both be considered of the highest quality.

Professional applications will be judged in two rounds. First, members of the Alexia Board and its executive advisors will review portfolios and move those demonstrating strong visual skills to a second round. In that round, judges that are industry leaders first read and rank the story proposals for all those portfolios brought forward. If no judge thinks the proposal is worth considering, the portfolio is not reviewed in the second round. A winner is chosen based on the judges’ determination of the combination of the strongest proposal and photography.

The National Press Photographers Association is pleased to announce the2012 Short Grants program, six grants of $3,000 each that will be awarded to support photojournalists who are creating compelling picture stories in their communities.

The grant is designed for funding projects small enough in scale that the bulk of the work can be accomplished in two weeks or less.

Last year NPPA offered five inaugural Short Grants, and the first-ever winners were Victor J. Blue, Gabriela Bulisova, Mary F. Calvert, Matt Eich, and Mark Ovaska.

The grants are made possible with funds from overseas reprographic rights organizations which give money to organizations like NPPA, through the Author’s Coalition of America, to benefit U.S.-based professional photographers.

NPPA past president Alicia Wagner Calzada is the chair of the NPPA Short Grants program.

“Last year was a great success, with five great winners who have been using the grant to fund important projects, Calzada said. “I’m excited that we are expanding the grant program this year to six awards so that even more photographers will be able to tell powerful stories in their communities. Though most of the entrants last year were independent photographers, staff photographers are encouraged to apply as well.”

NPPA executive director Mindy Hutchison said that applications will be accepted online through July 16, 2012.

“We see these grants as an opportunity for NPPA to support the work of professional photographers as well as a chance to highlight the importance of the community photo story,” she said today. “I’m thrilled that we’re able to continue to award them this year. Entry is now open, and we’ve got a three-week window to apply online. Our judging team is looking forward to seeing all of the interesting project proposals.”

Hey everyone! As you may know, I have happily taken on the role of President of the Women Photojournalists of Washington (WPOW), a new DC nonprofit dedicated to educating people about the work of women photojournalists around the city and the world. This is a call for members and a way to get involved no matter your gender!

For anyone who is a documentary or news photojournalism professional (EDITORS, STUDENTS, PROFESSORS, VIDEOGRAPHERS, MULTIMEDIA, PRODUCERS ARE WELCOME TOO!) We want you to join us. Come see what we’re all about today by joining our ranks! Please pass this onto others who might be interested too.

Also, for all the MENFOLK and out of towners, we have a section of our nonprofit called Friends of WPOW for men and women from around the country who want to support our efforts. Both men and women can join WPOW in a support basis, no matter where you live or what your profession.

So please consider joining today or passing this onto someone who might not know about us yet. We are excited about the new programs we have to offer. Our mentoring program is kicking off this year as well as thriving happy hours (men are encouraged to come…(grin)…) and exciting quarterly meetings with local DC photographers talking about their latest projects. This coming year we hope to have more exciting exhibits of our work, lectures for the general public and scholarship and projects grants too!

So come one and come call and join this great group today at http://womenphotojournalists.org

I just got some great news: I won the WHNPA Fall 2008 Lecture Grant so I can visit Syracuse University this spring to lecture to Bruce Strong and David Sutherland’s photojournalism students about my work and the WHNPA project grant I won in 2006.

I am so thankful to live in Washington, DC and be a member of such a great organization like the White House News Photographer’s Association! Truly. It’s a pretty wonderful thing to be able to belong to a group which supports photographers’ ambitions to give back to members of the student community.

Thanks to Chairman Leighton Mark and all the members of the Grant Committee for this awesome award! I am so thankful to be able to give back to my alma mater!
