Southern Illinois University Carbondale School of Journalism (http://www.siu.edu/departments/journal/) is seeking three outstanding teachers and scholars to join its faculty in tenure-track positions in August 2009. One position is at the assistant or associate professor rank in advertising. Duties include teaching courses in such areas as strategy, campaigns, research methods, and new media techniques. A Ph.D. is required. Preference will be given to applicants with substantial professional experience in advertising or strategic communication.

A second position is an assistant or associate professor in new media. Duties include teaching courses in new media, on-line publication and quantitative research methods. A Ph.D. or other terminal degree in communications or a related field is required. Preference will be given to applicants who have significant professional media experience.

A third position is an assistant professor new media practice. Duties include teaching courses in new media and on-line publication, as well as working on-line with student journalists. A Ph.D. or other terminal degree in communications or related field preferred. A master’s degree plus significant professional experience in journalism is required.

Preference will be given to applicants who have substantial professional media experience. For all three positions, preference also goes to those who have:

1) a record of research or demonstrated capacity to do research
2) a record of excellence in teaching or a demonstrated aptitude for teaching
3) new media skills

The School seeks candidates who can contribute to a climate that values and uses diversity in all its forms to enliven and make more inclusive the mission of the School. Opportunities available to participate in the College’s Global Media Research Center, and to teach graduate courses in areas of expertise. In addition, the successful applicant will have the opportunity to mentor students who work at the Daily Egyptian, the School’s award-winning newspaper. (ABD candidates may apply. They must provide official evidence of completion of the earned doctorate prior to the date of appointment, otherwise this position will convert to an appointment at the rank of Instructor with a lower salary.)
