From the ever amazing Noelle at FotoKonbit:

Friends and supporters,

FotoKonbit has had a busy year!  We have permanently established our
base in Haiti and are gearing up for our newest workshops in August.
Our 2011 accomplishments so far include a Time lightbox article,
exhibitions in Port-au-Prince, Miami, and Barbados, and a featuring in
the LOOK 3 Festival of the Photograph.  We have worked with over 100
FotoKonbit participants in Haiti, and we are growing, but we need your
help!

Here are some ways you can support us for our upcoming August workshops:

Check out our B&H wishlist, for as little as $25, you can purchase
some of the supplies we will need:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/wl/413BFE988C

Donate your old (or new) DSLR camera.  Our students need all the
cameras they can get and will make the most of your donations.  If you
are in the NYC area, we can come pick them up, otherwise we can
provide you a mailing address.

You can also make a tax-deductible contribution to help us build our
first FotoKonbit photo studio by making a donation:
http://www.fotokonbit.org/#/how-you-can-help

Please be sure to make your contributions by MONDAY AUGUST 1 so that
we get them in time for our workshops.

Also, please spread the word far and wide!  We are a small
organization making a big impact on the lives of our participants, and
we can only do it with your help.

All the very best,

The FotoKonbit team

Momenta Workshops’ Project Series to feature the coveted Leica M9 and X1

Washington, DC (July 22, 2011) –  Momenta Workshops, the documentary photography and multimedia training company, has chosen to collaborate  on their 2011-2012 Project Series with Leica Camera, Inc., the legendary German camera manufacture. Beginning November 2011, participants of Momenta Project workshops are invited to discover all the facets of narrative documentary photography and multimedia storytelling while capturing images of uncompromising quality with Leica equipment. Host destinations include New Orleans, Washington, D.C., India and South Africa. The collaboration between Leica Camera and Momenta will kick off with a seminar on the art and business of nonprofit photography in honor of FotoWeekDC in November, 2011.

“Leica Camera is excited to lend our support to Momenta Workshops’ Project Series,” says Christian Erhardt, Vice President of Marketing at Leica Camera, Inc. “Momenta Workshops and Leica Camera share the common goal of providing visual journalists and artists around the world with an unparalleled shooting experience. We are delighted to offer participants of Momenta Workshops’ Project Series the opportunity to capture images of unmatched brilliance with our equipment.”

“Photographers have been using Leica cameras to document the world since the inception of photojournalism,” said John Anderson, Founder of Momenta Workshops. “The merging of Leica cameras with Momenta’s participants is a natural fit. Both companies have a mission to better the world through quality photographic creation. Now, our attendees will be able to create quality nonprofit photo stories while using the best digital cameras for documentary photographers.”

While working alongside nonprofits around the world, participants of these special Momenta workshops experience both hands-on training programs with Momenta’s award winning instructors and the benefits of using Leica digital cameras and lenses for their documentary projects. Each Momenta workshop features one-on-one editing sessions for at least one hour a day with instructors. Other program highlights include lectures, customized handbooks, software training, storytelling building and project development.

“These workshops are more like a photographic practicum than a workshop,” said Anderson. “The experience allows attendees to be submerged into a documentary environment with real-world expectations. This trains photographers to work on a deadline, learn new techniques and expand their narrative skills while being surrounded by other passionate documentarians.”

Ranging from five to ten days, the workshops welcome both amateur and professional photographers. Amateurs can explore the world of point-and-shoot photography with the X1, Leica’s high-performance compact camera, while more experienced photographers have the opportunity to utilize Leica’s flagship M9 rangefinder camera along with the portfolio of M lenses.

For additional information on this special series of workshops and to sign up, please visit www.momentaworkshops.com or e-mail info@momentaworkshops.com. To learn more about Leica Camera, please visit www.leica-camera.com.

You know how you go to trade shows and conventions and the reps say, “Oh, call me and we’ll try to get you a good deal!” It’s usually lip service.  I reconnected with the guys from Roberts again at the NPPA NSC this March and they said to call when I needed gear. Well, after my second purchase in two weeks from Roberts in Indianapolis, I can say they were not kidding!

So far: they’ve beaten B&H’s price, gave me a pro deal on a replacement piece for me, got me a rush replacement fast, suggested a great substitute off-brand back up for one of my accessories, and they carry support for my Leica gear. I really, really like them and highly recommend. When you call, tell them you’re a pro and ask to speak to a professional representative. Good luck!

From my buddy Stace who volunteers videoing the speakers at Look3. It’s a great chance to see the presenters up close for free!  He’s looking for a few good folks to help run the crew for the videos:

Friday and Saturday: I can use a camera operator – also, a person that
can read timecode and can create a written camera log of the event -
harder than it sounds. This involves watching the timecode on a camera
and listening intently to what is happening during the show, and
writing it all down. Not word for word, but questions, notable
responses, etc.

I can use different folks on both nights for sure, and they’ll receive
plenty of guidance and support, plus the opportunity to work with some
really great folks. If you know anyone who might be interested, please
send them my way!

Cheers,
Stace Carter

There are lots of biz policies out there and I found the best deals with Weaver Bros. Insurance rep Paul McGonagle. I’ve got 1 million dollar liability coverage, $25,000 worth of gear and overseas coverage for under $700. (I think its silly to keep these things a big secret on what kind of deal you struck so if you found something better let me know.)

He’s a great guy and getting used to photographers since I keep sending him folks. They also got me a check for my broken laptop in a week and would have sent a replacement if I had asked.

Call him up and tell him I sent you! 301.986.4400

hey all,

i am headed down to colombia next week for a short trip and need to borrow a pro or prosumer video camera.  it doesn’t have to be the latest and greatest,  hoping that perhaps someone who has switched to HD has an old camera collecting dust they wouldn’t mind lending me.

i need the camera to shoot a short video for a foundation for at-risk youth i work with outside of medellin.  i would use the video to help raise funds for them.  i don’t have a rental budget but could put the camera on my insurance policy to protect against theft, beer spillage or other catastrophic events.

if you or anyone you know can help, i would appreciate greatly it as would the foundation.  please spread the word.

all the best,
dennis
