La Frontera: The Drug War In Mexico – Lecture

Washington DC

For over a year, award-winning documentary photographer Louie Palu conducted in-depth research and fieldwork on the drug war in Mexico and its relationship to the United States. He traveled more than 2,000 miles along the U.S.-Mexico border, documenting violence, organized crime, and the drug trade.

Palu will discuss his work with Andrés Martinez, Vice President and Editorial Director at New America, and give insights into the ground conditions on the border. He will also present his unique publication, “Mira Mexico,” developed as an outreach tool to illustrate how images influence and manipulate our understanding of an issue.

Join the New America Foundation for this conversation on the social and political issues influencing the current situation in Mexico – and how these factors affect the United States.

Join photographers Andrea Juan and 2012 International Awards Competition Winner Gaston Lacombe as they present work recently carried out in Antarctica, looking at similar subjects with different approaches. In their photography, both artists explore life and color in an Antarctica often assumed barren and white. While Lacombe documents the life and color that presently exists on the continent, Juan, in her installations, creates landscapes of the future, theoretical projections of what Antarctica might look like as climate change bring new lifeforms and vegetation to its shores.

From one of our Momenta students:

Hi, I have had the good fortunate of having an image selected as one of the Finalists in the Canon USA, Ron Howard, Project Imaginat10n campaign/photo contest!  I’m told that they received well over 100,000 entries, and it is indeed a honor to be one of the Finalists.  You can find out more about the contest and see a video announcement from Ron Howard at:    https://www.longliveimagination.com

I would really appreciate your supporting me in becoming one of the winners by voting for my photo and asking your friends to do the same.  For your information the photo was made this past April while I was attending the Momenta Project New Orleans Workshop with a Leica M9, and 35mm Summicron.

Winning this is a long shot, but I’m close!!  Please vote ( you will have to register on the site ) for my image “Moving On” in the “Character” theme at:

Revolution Revisited is a project by 1987 Pulitzer Prize winner photographer Kim Komenich, now a professor at San Jose State University.  In 2011, Komenich began locating and reconnecting with the subjects from his spot news winning essay from the People’s Power Revolution which overthrew Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos and put Corazon Aquino in power.

The website features then and now image pairs, a longer essay about the revolution, interviews with the photographer, video stories and a database of over 500 outtakes from his coverage, which Komenich hopes will help to locate more subjects from his coverage in the mid-1980s.

In a bold move, a Jamie’s Lister requested to be put on the Holiday Giving list and I think this kind of chutzpah should be rewarded! It also helps that the project involves two of my favorite folks: Amanda Lucidon and Ed Kashi. Here are the details on Amanda’s project and remember: $5, $10, $20…it all helps make people’s dream come true.

THE LEGAL STRANGER: DOCUMENTING SAME SEX COUPLES & THE DEFENSE OF MARRIAGE ACT

I’ve been working on a project for the past two years about the impacts of the Defense of Marriage Act on same-sex couples, which denies legally married same-sex couples 1,138 federal rights. Through photos, video, audio and journals, the project follows five personal stories as same-sex couples try to navigate the convoluted legal system for parental rights, survivor benefits, immigration status, health care and estate benefits. The work can be seen on the website: http://legalstranger.com
I also partnered with Talking Eyes Media, a non-profit media company started by Ed Kashi and Julie Winokur which uses multimedia storytelling to advocate for social change. Through this partnership, I’m able to offer tax-deductible donations through our fundraising campaign: http://igg.me/p/51647?a=320240
I know times are tight so if people can’t afford to donate, they can still help by sharing the campaign link with others. They can also share/follow the stories:

Lauren’s new blog.

I don’t usually read blogs very often. I know, that’s ironic since I’m posting this on my blog! However, Lauren’s first post was so personal and thoughtful about how photography has effected the ways she grieves and remembers, that I read the whole thing. I encourage you all to check out this great article:

Hey gang! Let’s show some photo love for a fellow Jamie’s Lister, Christian Fuchs. He has just become a photo blogger for HuffPost/AOL folks  and I’d like to ask you to share this link and “like” it, etc. He’s doing great stuff at his job in the international nonprofit world so let’s help support documentarians in that industry! Thanks so much! -Jamie
